Right steps can save one's life while a small mistake can ruin it. Here, I give you the most common First Aid mistakes and their solution provided by the experts.

Most Common First Aid Mistakes

Dos - In case of mild burn, wash the area and apply antibiotic ointment immediately. Rush to the hospital in case of burn in eyes, mouth, ears or burns that are followed by fever.
  • Electrical Burns: Don'ts - They are very dangerous as they cause invisible internal damage. So, don't fail to visit a doctor immediately even if the effect is not visible.
Dos -Do visit a doctor immediately.
  • Finger cut:Don'ts - This is very common mistake we do. Don't preserve the loose part by placing directly on ice.
Dos - Wrap the affected part with a wet gauze(cloth for dressing purpose), place that in watertight bag and place the bag on ice. Apply ice on the wound on hands and other parts of the body to reduce swelling. Bring the patient along with the bag and ice into the emergency room.
  • Sprained Ankle: Don'ts - Don't use a heating pad to reduce the pain as it can have an adverse effect.
Dos - Apply ice to the affected area and if the pain is too much then take the person to the emergency room. There might be chances of a fracture or dislocation.
  • Knocked-out tooth: Don'ts - Don't scrub the tooth hard with water even if its dirty. You can however rinse it gently once.
Dos - Keep the tooth dipped in milk if possible and go to the doctor as soon as possible as there are chances of re-implanting the tooth again.
  • Poison Intake:Don'ts - Don't try to induce vomiting or take Ipecac syrup unless instructed by emergency personnel.
Dos - Instead rush to the poison control emergency clinic immediately along with the ingested substance.
  • Pierced by a sharp instrument:Don'ts - Don't try to remove the object as it can cause further damage and increased bleeding.
Dos - Try to stabilize the area and rush to the emergency room.
  • Nose Bleeding:Don'ts - Don't lean back. When the bleeding gets stopped, don't blow your nose or bend over.
Dos - You can however follow this technique to get some relief. Sit upright with leaning forward a little, pinch your nose steadily below the nasal bone for sometime. If that doesn't help then visit the doctor immediately.

These steps are very crucial for everyone to know as we never know when a person fall into any of the above situation. In that situation we should all be prepared to handle the situation effectively.
