Jet Lag Can Soon Become A History!

Anybody who has to travel for a long duration in flight especially while moving from one country to another having different time zones know what Jet Lag is how irritating it can become. There is a good news for all those who has to face it due to their work or some other reasons. Read on to know how!

What is Jet lag and What are it's Causes?

Wiki describes jet lag as a physiological condition which is a consequence of alterations to circadian rhythms (24-hour cycle in the biochemical, physiological or behavioral processes of living entities). It results from rapid long-distance travel, especially east-west or west-east travel, as on a jet plane.

There are several causes of Jet lag. The most important reasons are listed below:

  • Traveling across different time zones
  • Dry atmosphere inside the jet aircraft
  • Excited, tired, hungry, stressed or nervous before the flight
  • Too much intake of alcohol
  • Lack of exercise
How Can Jet Lag be a History Soon?

There is a good news for all those Jet lag sufferers. A software program has been created by researchers at Brigham and Woman's Hospital and the University of Michigan that prescribes a regimen for avoiding jet lag using timed light exposure. This program tries to re-synchronize the body according the new environmental condition. The program function in a very simple way. It first considers the input condition like no. of timezones traveled and background light level. Then based on these input conditions, it builds a mathematical model which instructs the user the exact time of the day when they should avoid light and other situations to reduce the effect of jet lag. Researchers made use of the time-light exposure synchronization method to design the program so that it can reset a person's internal clocks to align with local time.

According to the experts, although this method is not yet available to the public, it has direct implications for designing schedules for jet lag, shift-work, and extreme environments, such as in space, undersea or in polar regions.

I know that all of you will eagerly wait for this software to be available for the public. Even I waiting for that. Let's hope for the best!
